Abstract

A device for removing pituitary glands from animals' heads comprises two spoon-shaped members, one of which is mounted for rotation about the axis of the instrument to form either an open hemispherical spoon or a closed sphere. This, in its open condition, is inserted through the occipital hole and spinal duct of the head until it lies adjacent to the gland and the two halves are then closed, so that, in closing, they cut around the gland and enclose it, after which the closed device is withdrawn. In actual forms of the tool the outer spoon-like element is mounted on a hollow shaft extending from the handle, while the inner spoon is secured on an inner rotatable spindle which is moved, as necessary, by suitable lever or rack and pinion mechanism.
