Transmitter apparatus for signalling by the generation of ultrasonic pressure. waves comprises two identical magnetostrictive or piezoelectric transducers and means for feeding frequency modulated ultrasonic electric oscillations to said transducers differentially so that one takes frequency swings upwards from fo to fo+ fd and the other takes frequency swings downwards from fo to fo-fd, fo being the carrier centre frequency and fd the deviation, said transducers being respectively tuned to frequencies fo+fa and fo-fa, fa being a frequency slightly less than fd. This overcomes the rather peaky response of transducers and provides a band-pass characteristic. Whilst the system is primarily intended for underwater communication it may also be used for transmitting signals through the atmosphere or solid bodies. The transducers may be associated with reflectors or concentrators to produce directional properties.
