702,086. Preserving food. KOOPERATIVA FORBUNDET FORENING, U.P.A. Sept. 21, 1951 [Oct. 6, 1950], No. 22147/51. Class 49 A method of sterilizing food such as fruit, vegetables, berries, meat and fish packed in containers comprises causing a dry, non-condensing current of gas, such as air, heated to at least sterilization temperature to circulate at atmospheric pressure directly in contact with the containers, which are caused to rotate as they move forward, and giving the current of gas a speed of at least 5 m/sec., preferably 5 to 8 m./sec. As shown, cans are fed on a stationary conveyer 22 under gravity through a gate 21 and through a housing mounted on legs 10 and divided by a horizontal partition 11 to form upper and lower chambers each of which is divided vertically into two compartments 14, 13 and 15, 16 (not shown), one 14, 15 housing the conveyer 22 and the other 13, 16 (not shown) housing a fan and electric heater (17 and 20 respectively only shown), the cans emerging through a gate 23, both gates consisting of toothed wheels driven synchronously so that a's a can is fed in, a treated can is ejected. As the cans pass through they are subjected to air heated by the heaters and circulated by the fans, the temperature being controlled in the upper compartments 13, 14 above sterilization temperature, in the case of peas about 135‹C, and in the lower compartments 15, 16 (not shown), at the sterilization temperature, e.g. for peas at 120‹C.
