Abstract

Viscose is extruded into a coagulating bath to form a thread, and the thread is withdrawn from the bath, formed into at least two helices and subjected to a series of liquid treatments and to drying, the steam or hot water used for drying one thread helix being passed about the external periphery of the first thread helix. As shown, viscose is extruded as a thread 12 and is withdrawn from the coagulating bath by a take-up reel 15. It is processed on reels 16 ... 19 and, finally, dried on reel 20. The drying reel is internally heated by steam, preferably under pressure, from a supply 22, and the steam, after circulating through the reel 20, is led off through a take-off conduit 26 to a manifold 28 located near the thread take-up reel 15. The steam flowing from the manifold is forced through openings 30 outwardly and toward reel 15, enveloping it and wetting the thread, thus preventing deposition of salt crystals. When <PICT:0702023/IV(a)/1> using low-pressure steam a trap 31 may be inserted in the lowest part of the conduit 26 to separate out the condensate.
