Abstract

Mono (thiourethane) substituted organic isocyanates obtained by the reaction of approximately equal molecular proportions of a polyisocyanate and a mercaptan, the thiol group of the mercaptan being the only group in either reactant possessing a reactive hydrogen atom, are used as cross-linking agents in diisocyanate-modified polyesters and polyesteramides. Specified adducts are those resulting from the reaction of 4:41-diphenyl diisocyanate, 1-methyl-2:4-phenylene diisocyanate, 1:5- naphthalene diisocyanate and hexamethylene diisocyanate with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. Many other mercaptans and polyisocyanates are specified (see Group IV (b)).ALSO:The invention comprises mono (thio-urethan) substituted organic isocyanates <FORM:0701712/IV(b)/1> where R is an organic radical and R1 is an organic radical containing at least one -NCO group and their preparation by reacting approximately equimolecular amounts of an organic polyisocyanate and a mercaptan, the thiol group of the mercaptan being the only group on either reactant which possesses a reactive hydrogen atom. Specified polyisocyanates include aliphatic diisocyanates such as hexamethylene diisocyanate, aromatic polyisocyanates such as 4:41-diphenyl, 1-methyl-2:4-phenylene and 1:5-naphthalene diisocyanates. Specified mercaptans include alkyl and aryl mercaptans and mercaptans containing a thiazole ring such as 2-mercaptobenzothiazole. Preferably the reaction is carried out by dissolving the mercaptan and an excess of the polyisocyanate in an inert solvent and allowing to stand. An example describes the preparation of the mono adduct of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole and 4:41-diphenyl diisocyanate.
