Abstract

A product for use as surgical or dental prostheses or in dental repairs is made by intimately incorporating a solid after-halogenated polyvinyl halide or after-halogenated copolymer containing vinyl halide groups, with a liquid polymerisable vinyl compound in which the solid polymerisate is swellable and which consists wholly or mainly of methyl methacrylate, and polymerizing the liquid in the presence of a catalyst. The halogenated polymer is preferably after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride and should be in a swellable form. This may be obtained by swelling in acetone, drying in vacuo and grinding and sifting the loosened mass; or precipitating from a cooled and gelled solution with a non-solvent; or by cutting up extruded filaments into short lengths. Other compounds which may be added to the methyl methacrylate include butyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate and octyl methacrylate. Specified catalysts are benzoyl peroxide and toluene sulphinic acid. Pigments such as cadmium red and titanium dioxide may be added to the compositions which are moulded in plaster or gypsum moulds. Specifications 401,200 and 484,343 are referred to.
