Abstract

Varnish oils are manufactured by incorporating with raw linseed oil, cyclopentadiene or a substance yielding the same under the conditions, and heating the mixture under reflux condenser conditions at atmospheric pressure to a temperature not greater than 450 DEG F. After the free cyclopentadiene has distilled over the temperature may be raised to 600 DEG F. in the same apparatus, or in a vacuum pan, or in a closed pan with carbon dioxide or like inert atmosphere, or in an open pan under atmospheric pressure or lower pressure, to increase the viscosity of the varnish oil. The raw linseed oil starting material may contain a proportion of other oils compatible therewith up to less than 50 per cent. by weight of the total; dehydroxylated castor oil, oiticica oil, tung oil, stillingia oil, tobacco-seed oil, fish oil, soya bean oil, niger seed oil and isano oil are specified. Dicyclopentadien may be used. The reaction may be effected in the presence of a peroxide catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide, or a percentage of oil having a peroxide content, e.g. a blown oil, or both. The reaction may also be effected in the presence of non-reactive solvents such as white spirit or a paraffin oil which is removed together with unreacted diene at the completion of the reaction. The varnish oil products are additive compounds of the drying oil and cyclopentadiene, particularly a linseed oil cyclopentadiene complex containing between 5 and 20 per cent. by weight of cyclopentadiene. Specification 700,621 is referred to.
