Abstract

The flameproofing process of the parent Specification is modified by coating or impregnating the material with a solution, e.g. in toluene or ethylene dichloride, or dispersion of the partially polymerized phosphoric ester, drying the material and passing it through the halogen in solution, e.g. in carbon tetrachloride or ethylene dichloride, or vapour form, then through a dilute solution of alkali and finally washing. Alternatively the material may be coated or impregnated with the monomeric ester which is polymerized in situ and similarly after-treated. The monomeric ester may be applied as an emulsion in an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol or as a solution in benzene or acetone, which may contain a catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide. Polymerization may be effected in a nitrogen atmosphere at 90 DEG C. to a bromine number of 70, corresponding to one-third of the original unsaturation. The partially polymerized ester (bromine number 150) may be inhibited with hydroquinone, monomer and low polymers removed by distillation in vacuo or by precipitation with excess carbon tetrachloride and the residue (bromine number 90) or precipitate used for impregnation. The dialkene amido phosphates described in Specification 699,951 may also be used in the process.
