Abstract

700,053. Making catliodes for discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 30, 1952 [Feb. 2, 1951], No. 2496/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Groups XXIII and XL(a)] Powder metallurgy.-In the manufacture of a cathode comprising a cup 3, having a recessed portion containing a supply of alkaline earth compounds 5, which is closed by a porous refractory-metal plate 1, the pores of the latter are loaded with a filling of a hard material, so that the plate may be polished without closing up the pores. The plate 1, of porous tungsten ,is sintered at 2200‹ C. and then buttwelded to the forced-in bottom 2 of the cup. The plate and cup are then soaked in a solution of polystyrene in acetone, dried and polished, assembled in the tube with the heating element 4, and heated to 400‹ C. to vaporize the polystyrene. In a modification the plate 1 is impregnated with molten copper and polished, after which the copper is removed by sulphuric acid or volatilization in a vacuum and the plate is then welded to the cup.
