Abstract

699,958. Windscreen cleaners. O'SHEI, W. E. Nov. 5, 1951 [Aug. 4, 1950; Sept. 5, 1950; Sept. 7, 1950], Nos. 19549/50, 21881/50 and 22074/50. Class 138 (i). A dual windscreen wiper unit comprises a frame carrying two wiper arm spindle bearings positioned at an angle to one another, the spindles in said bearings being driven from a common oscillable driving spindle carried by the frame between the wiper spindles, through a mechanical transmission connecting the driving spindle to the wiper arm spindles, wherein the portion of the frame to which at least one of the wiper spindle bearings is attached is connected to the remaining portion of the frame through a hinge or a flexible or easily bendable connection so that the angular inclination of that spindle bearing relative to the frame may be altered. The frame comprises a thin sheet metal bar 1 with central strengthening flanges 1a and end portions 3, 3a which are flexible or bendable so that the wiper spindle bearings 5, 5a and spindles 4, 4a may be adjusted angularly when mounting the unit in the vehicle. In a modification one or both portions 3, 3a may be separate from the central portion and connected thereto by a hinge formed by a length of flexible strip material. Alternatively the ends may be entirely of such strip material riveted or welded to the ends of the central portion. A motor 2 is supported centrally of the frame 1 and a crank 7 on its spindle 6 reciprocates a connecting rod 9, the bent ends 10, 10a of which connect with cranks 8, 8a on the wiper spindles. Since transverse twisting of the rod 9 must take place, as shown at 11, 12, in Fig. 2, when the rod reciprocates the connection between the rod and the pin of crank 7 is made sufficiently free to permit such twisting and thus prevent binding. In another modification the central portion of the rod 9 may move in guides and each of the ends 10, 10a are pivotally or flexibly connected to the central portion so as to pivot or flex about a substantially vertical axis when the rod reciprocates.
