Abstract

699,874. Harvesting root crops. WOTA, Ltd., and CURRY, J. B. March 7, 1952 [June 22, 1951], No. 14919/51. Class 6(iii) Haulms or like top growth on both sides of a row of potatoes or other crops are cut by a pair of positively-driven vertical cutters mounted to straddle the row and free to rise and fall in vertical planes. The invention is shown applied to the frame members 7 of a potato harvester as described in Specification 641,272 to operate in advance of the usual lifting share. Each cutting disc 1 is supported on a stub axle 2 on a bar 4 freely suspended on pivot pin 5 in a bracket 6 attached to a fork of the frame 7. To control the working depth, a pin 8 on the bar moves in an arcuate slot 9 in its bracket, and a screw stop 10 is provided to vary the lower limit of movement. The discs are driven by chain gears from a power-driven shaft 14 which may be the idler shaft of the crop elevator. The cutters may be plain or dished discs with sharpened edges or with saw teeth, or radial blades may be used. The haulm cutter may be mounted on an independent motor-driven machine of the walk type the cutters being driven from the power unit or from the ground wheels.
