Abstract

699,464. Hair waving appliances. SARATOGA CORPORATION. Jan. 15, 1951 [Jan. 31, 1950], No. 1047/51. Class 131 A hair curling rod comprises a rigid core surrounded by a body of soft absorbent material saturated with a permanent waving solution. As shown, a body 2 of cotton, felt, foam rubber or synthetic sponge surrounds a wire core 1, to one end of which a flexible cord 3 is knotted or cemented at 3a and the other end of which forms a notch 4 receiving the free end of the cord 3 when it is in curl-retaining position. In a modification the core is a rod of wood or plastic and one end of the surrounding soft body is stiffened with varnish. &c. and slotted to frictionally retain the free end of the cord. As shown in Fig. 6 the curling rods 2' are enclosed in a hermetically sealed envelope 7, 8, preferably of plastic, having. separate, heat-sealed compartments each containing a curling rod and an excess of a hair-waving solution 12. In use a tress of dry hair is wound on a saturated curler, the tension of the hair squeezing the solution from the curler into the hair, a fixing solution being applied after an appropriate time and later the curler removed.
