Abstract
699,274. Electric capacitors. BRITISH DIELECTRIC RESEARCH, Ltd. Aug. 6, 1952 [Aug. 7, 1951], No. 18604/51. Class 37. A condenser strip comprising metal foil coated on both sides with resinous dielectric material applied from a liquid composition of that material is subjected to an etching process which removes the metal at one or both edges of the strip, thereby making the width of the foil less than that of the coatings. A condenser strip, Fig. 2, comprising a metallic foil 1 coated on both sides with polystyrene 2 unwinds from a reel 5, Fig. 1, and passes through an electrolytic etching bath 12 and thence via washing bath 19 and drying oven 20 on to take-up reel 21. As drawn from the latter the finished strip appears minus the etched-away margin 26 as in Figs. 3 and 4 with coatings 1 projecting beyond the foil edges. To make the roll capacitor shown, Fig. 5, the strip is cut at 29, Fig. 4, and the two half-strips superposed and rolled together with the undercut foil edges inside the roll. The foil may consist of aluminium, tin or copper and the dielectric may be polytetra fluorethylene. The invention is not limited to electrolytic etching; a purely chemical etching process may be employed.
