Abstract

A liquid cleansing composition comprises a dispersion of a potash soap of tall-oil and an organic solvent consisting of at least 50 per cent by weight of an aromatic hydrocarbon and possibly further ingredients in water, the proportions between the soap and organic solvent being such that the solvent is kept in stable collodial solution in the soap. The saponification of the tall oil is preferably incomplete. The organic solvents specified comprise benzene, toluene or xylene, which may contain a proportion of a chlorinated hydrocarbon such as carbon tetrachloride or trichlor-ethylene. If desired, oxygenated organic solvents may be mixed with the solvent such as ketones or acetates, particularly butyl acetate. Suitable proportions of the ingredients are specified. The dispersions may also contain a basic substance compatible with their stability, such as sodium carbonate or triethanolamine; or a substance reducing the surface tension thereof such as sulphonates or amino-compounds thereof, particularly isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate; or a water-softening agent such as trisodium phosphate. The dispersions are used diluted with water in a quantity from 10 to 50 times the quantity of dispersion. The compositions may be used for scouring floors, dishes, textiles, hands &c. particularly for removing grease.
