Abstract

<PICT:0699088/IV (b)/1> The direct hydration of an olefine or carbonylation reactions where an olefine, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are reacted to produce an aldehyde or alcohol, are carried out in a converter which contains at least two separate catalyst beds in series, liquid/vapour contacting means such as bubble caps, arranged between consecutive catalyst beds, and proportioning devices which cause the liquid phase to flow through the converter countercurrent to the gaseous phase, at least partly without contacting the catalyst. According to an example isopropanol is produced by the hydration of propylene in the converter shown in the Figure where catalyst beds 2 are separated by bubble cap trays 4, and passages 6 permit a regulated quantity of liquid to by-pass the catalyst. Water and propylene in a ratio of 7 : 1 by weight are fed at a rate of 3 litres per hour per litre of catalyst, which is unsupported pelleted blue oxide of tungsten, at a pressure of 250 atmospheres at 270 DEG C. Ten separate catalyst beds of a depth progressively increasing from the top downwards are employed and the bubble trays are arranged so that 10 per cent of the total water fed to the tap of the connecter passes directly over the catalyst. Specification 671,971 is referred to.ALSO:<PICT:0699088/III/1> A converter for reactions between reactants which are at least partly in the gaseous phase in the presence of a liquid reactant and/or solvent and a solid catalyst with which at least the gaseous phase reactant must be contacted, contains at least two separate catalyst beds in series, liquid/vapour contacting means arranged between consecutive catalyst beds and proportioning devices which cause the liquid to flow through the converter in countercurrent to the gaseous phase, at least partly without contact with the catalyst. In the Figure, liquid material descending the column 1 in countercurrent to ascending gaseous reactants, passes in part through passages 6 without contacting the catalyst beds 2. A proportion, controlled by proportioning devices (not shown) such as adjustments for the overflow, passes in contact with the gas through bubble caps 4 and through the catalyst. The converter is particularly applicable to carboxylation reactions wherein an olefine, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are reacted to produce an aldehyde or alcohol, to the hydrogenation of creosote or fuel oil or the direct hydration of olefines such as ethylene or propylene to the corresponding alcohols. An example relates to the production of isopropanol by the hydration of propylene in the presence of a blue oxide of tungsten catalyst employing a pressure of 250 atmospheres and a temperature of 270 DEG C. Water and propylene in a ratio of 7 to 1 by weight are passed over at a space velocity of 3 litres/litres/hour. The depth of the beds increases from the top downwards and the bubble trays are arranged so that only 10 per cent of the water passes directly over the catalyst.
