699,063. Planting-tools. MUTCH, J. F. Feb. 29, 1952 [March 6, 1951], No. 5395/52. Class 6(ii) A tool for sowing potatoes or the like comprises a tubular member 1 provided with a blade 7 which is open at one side. A deflector 19 pivotally mounted on pins 13 is movable to close the opening in the blade 7 and is provided with a driving pedal 20 and a deflector pedal 23. The member 1 is forced into the ground by means of handles 2 assisted by foot pressure on the driving pedal 20 which forces the deflector 19 into contact with the blade 7. Downward foot pressure on the deflector pedal 23 causes pivotal movement of the deflector 19 to enlarge the hole made in the ground and allow a potato 22 to enter the hole on withdrawal of the device. The depth of penetration into the soil is determined by a removable block 21 mounted below the pedal 20. A container for potatoes may be attached to a hook on the member 1 and a potato slicing blade may be provided in the container.
