A machine for wheeling along the ground and for measuring the distance traversed comprises a measuring wheel A mounted freely on a screwed rod D, a disc E threaded on the screwed rod D and a rod G extending from the measuring wheel 1 and adapted, on rotation with the measuring wheel A, to cause the disc E to rotate about the screwed rod D. Movement of the disc E along the rod D is measured by means of scales J associated with a pointer F on the disc E. Preferably, the measuring wheel A is one yard in circumference and each division on the scales J represents 2 yards or 2 revolutions of the measuring wheel A. The wheel A has three spokes enabling any odd feet traversed by the machine to be estimated from the position of the spokes at the end of a measuring run. The whole is mounted in a frame B to which a detachable wooden handle may be secured by means K, N.
