Abstract
N - Hydroxyalkyl - N : N1 - 1 : 2 - alkylene - ureas are obtained by heating primary 1 : 2-hydroxyalkylamines of the general formula NH2-CH2-CH(R)-OH in which R stands for hydrogen or an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical with not more than 4 carbon atoms with urea to a temperature in the range 130-250 DEG C. The molecular amount of hydroxyalkylamine should exceed that of the urea. Hydroxyalkylamines mentioned include monoethanolamine, 1 : 2-propanolamine and 1 : 2-butanolamine. Two examples are given, each using monoethanolamine, the first heating for 6 hours at 165-175 DEG C. and the second to 180 DEG C. for 4 hours.
