Abstract

696,802. Fishing reels. SHAKESPEARE CO. Jar.. 2, 1952, No. 136/52. Class 48. In a fishing reel wherein a spool 29 is mounted on a spindle 25 axially reciprocable by a driving shaft 5 which also rotates a line pick-up carrier 21, behind the spool, on which are pivoted radially disposed arms 55, 56 formed at the ends of a generally U-shaped pick-up 52 normally spring- urged to inoperative position, the pick-up 52 is automatically moved to operative position on rotation of the carrier 21 in the line-winding direction and to inoperative position on reverse rotation of the carrier. As shown a'spool housing 8 having a conical front 49 with a central guide eye 50 is clamped to a gearbox 2 by a bearing 13 and a nut 14. The spool 29 is adjustably frictionally mounted on the front end of the spindle 25, the rear end of which projects through a tubular shaft 18 of the carrier 21 into an end bearing 28 on the gearbox 2. The spindle is reciprocated by an 'eccentric 27 driven by a manually operated shaft 5 which carries a gear 24 to rotate a bevel gear 23 on the end of the shaft 18. The carrier 21 is clamped to the outer end of the tubular shaft 18 and pivotally receives diametrically opposed ends 55, 56 of the pick-up 52. The end 55 has a coil-spring 57 therearound to bias.the pick-up into its inoperative position shown in Figs. 2 and 5, and the end 56 merges into a looped finger 60 which, in the said inoperative position, projects through registering openings 61, 62, 63 in the gearbox wall, spool housing wall and a wearplate 16 respectively. The edges 64 of these openings form an abutment for the finger 60 which retains the pick-up in inoperative position when the gear 24 is actuated in reverse direction. To prevent the finger 60 engaging in the openings 61-63 during line winding rotation, a keeper 66, which is carried around by the pick-up, is arranged to bridge the width of the openings. On initial line-winding rotation, Fig. 6, the finger 60 engages a curved lead portion 65 on the wear plate 16 to swing the pick-up to operative position and allow rotation of the pick-up. To prevent the line catching behind the spool, the rear spool flange lies under an annular guard member 71 provided on a guard plate 70 rotatably mounted at the rear of the spool.
