Abstract

696,659. Aerials. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd. Nov. 20, 1951 [April 4, 1951], No. 7858/51. Class 40 (vii). In a slotted-waveguide aerial comprising a substantially linear array of slots of which a small number have large conductances as compared with the remainder, an iris or diaphragm is arranged across the guide in front of each slot of large conductance to cancel out the reactive component of the impedance introduced thereby, and thus reduce the standing-wave ratio in the guide. As shown in the Figure, the aerial comprises a waveguide having a large number of shunt-coupled slots cut in its broad face. In order to obtain a desired polar diagram, for example a fan beam, the four central slots are more strongly coupled to the wave-guide and thus have larger conductances than the remaining slots. In front of each of these, looking from the feed end, is arranged a slot D on the same side of the guide as the corresponding slot, a conducting diaphragm being inserted into each slot and then soldered or brazed into position. In the preferred embodiment the array is arranged along the focal line of a verticallyarranged cylindrical parabolic reflector so that the aerial produces a thin vertical fan beam.
