Abstract

696,398. Cutting sheet material. CORNELL PAPERBOARD PRODUCTS CO. June 25, 1951. [Nov. 3, 1950] No. 15019/51. Class 31 (i). A method of removing waste portions from a sheet which is partially severed along lines defining a plurality of container forming blanks comprises jetting a pneumatic blast solely against the waste portions to dislodge them from the sheet, while retaining the container forming blanks in the sheet. Individual sheets 15, e.g. of cardboard, are successively delivered from a stack 10 on to a matrix die 12 by means of a conveyer 11 and after each sheet has been partially severed by a reciprocating die 13 it is advanced by a conveyer 19 comprising laterallyspaced endless bands into proximity with air blast nozzles 50 which are connected to branch pipes 42 of a main supply pipe 43 through the intermediary of solenoid valves 41 controlled by a switch 33 having an actuator comprising a cam 26 mounted on a rotatable shaft 25 and having adjustably secured thereto members 30 which successively engage a spring 36 to close the switch. Each nozzle is adjustable longitudinally and laterally of the path of the sheets. After the waste portions 17 have been dislodged from the sheet it is delivered on to the top of a stack 150 and to facilitate registration of successive sheets, the marginal waste portions are preferably retained in connection with each sheet. The waste portions are guided by a pan 53 to a collecting hopper. In a modification, Fig. 8 (not shown), the nozzles are operated selectively in any sequence by providing each solenoid valve with an individual control switch and providing each switch with a separate actuator.
