Abstract

696,326. Extruding mudguard sections. BLUEMEL BROS., Ltd. June 3, 1952 [June 11, 1951], No. 13758/51. Class 87 (ii) [Also in Group XXXI] A method of manufacturing a cycle or like mudguard comprises extruding an elastomer-forming material through a die of shape, corresponding to the section of the mudguard, forming the material during the extrusion operation with a pair of openings 12 extending longitudinally of the extruded section adjacent opposite lateral edges, severing the extrusion into suitable lengths for mudguards and inserting resilient metal reinforcing members 13 in the openings in the extrusion. The lateral sides of the die opening are made of increased thickness and of circular cross section so that beads 11 are formed on the extruded body 10. The openings 12 are formed by mandrels. Reinforcing ribs 16 are also formed during the extrusion. The reinforcing members 13 are inserted after the extrusion has been severed into mudguard lengths and are of greater length than the mudguards so that their ends may be bent over into engagement with the inner faces of the mudguards as indicated at 14.
