In a machine for affixing tabs containing or consisting of thermoplastic material to laundry, etc. by pressure between heated platens, the tabs are severed from a roll by a scissor knife 5, Fig. 3, and gripped by a gripper 9 mounted on a reciprocating carrier 10 which stops under a printing head 18 comprising drums rotatable in grooves 20. The gripper 9 then passes to a nozzle 30, supplied from a reservoir 31 by a pump 33, which sprays the tab with a solvent to which water is added, and then to the heated applying platens 40, 54, Fig. 4. The upper platen 40 is mounted on a plunger 58 reciprocated by a rocket arm 63 having positive movement derived from cam followers 64, 65 while the lower platen has a rounded under side resting in a cup 55 to allow for irregularities in the work being operated on. The water added to the solvent is to prevent the tab from sticking to the heated upper platen by the generation of steam during the pressing and to allow for the escape of this steam a face plate 49 has holes 50 communicating with horizontal grooves 52. A roller 43, Fig. 5, on a spring urged arm 42 co-operates with the gripper to hold the tab as the platen descends so that pins 41 pierce the tab and locate it positively, the gripper 9 being simultaneously opened. The various parts of the machine are operated in timed relation from a common cam shaft 8 which completes one cycle on depression of a pedal or movement of a device extending over the lower platen or operation of a device incorporating a photo-electric cell. A device for holding over an edge of the tab strip before severing is described and a modified bottom platen is spring loaded.
