Abstract
Esters of inorganic acids are made by reacting an organic hydroperoxide having in the molecule the group >CH.OOH or a salt thereof with (1) an oxide, halide, or oxyhalide of arsenic, phosphorus, or sulphur, with or without subsequent hydrolysis, said oxide, halide or oxyhalide being capable of oxidation to a compound in which the arsenic, phosphorus, or sulphur is of higher valency, or (2) an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of a sulphur and oxygen-containing acid wherein the ratio of oxygen to sulphur is not greater than 3 : 1. The hydroperoxide may contain substituent groups, e.g. halo, ketonic, or carboxylic groups, and for producing diesters, carboxylic ester groups. Alkyl, naphthene, and alkylnaphthene hydroperoxides are referred to. The hydroperoxides may be produced by oxidation of paraffins or naphthenes, e.g. to effect only a low conversion and the product used without separation; this oxidation may be carried out with molecular oxygen in presence of organic peroxides or hypochlorites or organic salts of cobalt or manganese, and hydroperoxide concentration of the product may be increased by distillation, extraction with a polar solvent, or treatment with alkali and separation of the aqueous phase. In examples, a kerosine oxidate was treated with each of the following, followed by treatment with caustic soda: (1) sodium metabisulphite solution, (2) phosphorus trichloride, (3) arsenic tribromide, (4) thionyl chloride. Also in examples, (5) ethyl stearate is partially oxidized with air in presence of tertiary butyl hydroperoxide and the product is reacted with sulphur dioxide, followed by neutralization with caustic soda.
