Abstract

The tendency of sodium hydrosulphite to deteriorate on exposure to the atmosphere is reduced by mixing it with one or more liquid esters of low volatility derived from alcohols containing 5 or more carbon atoms. the amount of the ester(s) being insufficient to prevent the sodium hydrosulphite from flowing freely, say 0.1-2 per cent by weight. The ester may be used dissolved in a volatile solvent, e.g. ether or carbon tetrachloride which may be allowed to evaporate at will. Esters specified are dioctyl sebacate, and dinonyl-, dioctyl-, and diamyl phthalate. Specification 695,372 is referred to.
