Cooling; lubricating.-The frame is divided by a partition into a compartment containing mechanism and having in its lower part a reservoir of lubricant and a second compartment in which is a fan arranged to direct a stream of air towards the partition. In the machine described in Specification 691,894, as shown, the main shaft 30 carries a splasher 57, and one of the mechanism members carries a dipper 60, to distribute oil from the reservoir 24 in a mist in the compartment 20 to lubricate the mechanism therein. The shaft 30 carries a fan 75 in the adjacent compartment 21 which is provided with inlet apertures at eacli side of the bearing 31 and an outlet opening at the bottom, and the fan draws air through the former apertures and directs it against a series of vertical ribs 23 on the partition 19 so that the partition and thereby the oil mist are kept cool. The oil mist reaches the shaft bearing 37 along the shaft, excess oil being discharged from the bearing by a passage 63, and is collected in vertical passages 64, 65 feeding the shaft bearings 38, 42; the shaft bearing 43 is fed with oil by wicking 67, and parts of the mechanism outside the compartment 20 receive oil from mist-collecting passages with or without wicking. A return passage 69 is provided between the bearings 42, 43, and oil reaching the outside of the compartment collects in a sump 70.
