Abstract

695,133. Bobbins. ACROMETAL PRODUCTS, Inc. Oct. 25, 1950, No. 26059/50. Class 120(iii) A bobbin of metal, such as aluminium or an aluminium alloy, has out-turned flanges to each of which is secured a head of tough, resilient, non-metallic material, such as nylon, capable of being formed to provide a smooth edge which is not readily nicked, dented, cut, or otherwise marred: on the head, and overlying the edge of the flange and lying flush with the inner surface thereof, is a circumferential portion the internal part of which and the edge of the flange being provided with co-operating surfaces so that the head will snap over the flange and interlock therewith. The bobbin shown in Fig. 1 comprises drum members 12 each having a flange 12a over a shaped edge of which a correspondingly shaped portion 13a of a head 13 is snapped into the position shown: a flange 13f of each head projects beyond the edge of the member 12 into a tube 15 and is interlocked therewith by the engagement of ribs 13g with ribs 15a and grooves 15b; a compressed ring 14, which may be of the same material as the head, is interposed during the assembly to ensure a tight joint between the components, and tubular trunnions 13i provide a mounting for a spindle. In the bobbin B, Fig. 4, a collar 18 of the non- metallic material connects the flange of each drum member 16 to a tubular core 19, a rib 18b at each side of a flange 18 being received within corresponding grooves 16d and 19a in the drum and core. The flange of the drum member may comprise welded laminations, which may be of metals of different hardness; a centre boss of each head may be recessed to receive a metal apertured cup member, and extended barrel portions of the drum members may be joined by an internal collar of the non- metallic material to constitute the bobbin barrel, Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown). Internally extending hubs of the heads may be rabbetted to receive the ends of a central reinforcing tube, and the internal collar may be of synthetic resin or metal and bonded to the drum members by adhesive which may be of synthetic resin, Figs. 10, 11 (not shown). Exterior surfaces of the bobbin may be anodized. Specification 687,119 is referred to.
