Abstract
694,994. Fire alarms. SPECIALTIES DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. June 15, 1951, No. 14191/51. Class 118 (i). In a system. for detecting smoke or other suspended matter in air, of the type in which samples of air from a plurality of sources (e.g. the holds of ships) are passed successively through a smoke detector, a purging medium (e.g. clean air) is passed along the path through the detector between each sample. The detector may be used to operate an alarm or fire extinguisher. In the apparatus shown, air from the various holds in a ship is extracted through pipes 12A-D terminating in ports 50, by an extraction fan located in an exhaust pipe 36. A motor 17 causes valves 56 to lift in turn so that samples of the air pass to the exhaust-pipe through the upper chamber 27 and a smoke detector 10. After each valve has closed a further valve 44 is opened and this causes clean air to pass through the detector. An indicator 15 shows which valve is opened or, when the clean air valve is open, which valve has just closed, and the motor is stopped when smoke is detected.
