Abstract

694,819. Sliding-clasp fasteners. FLEX FASTENERS, Ltd. Feb. 18, 1952 [March 1, 1951], No. 5000/51. Class 44. A slider for a slide fastener comprises a slider body and pull member, the slider body having two slider wings and a bridge member on at least one of the wings, the bridge member linking a retaining portion of the pull member to the slider body, the bridge member having a slot extending in a direction inclined to the direction in which the slider is to be moved for opening or closing the fastener, for enabling the retaining portion of the pull member to be passed through the slot when the slider is being assembled, to lie between the bridge member and the slider wing carrying the bridge member, means being provided for normally preventing the retaining portion of the pull member from escaping from its position between the bridge member and the slider wing. In the arrangement shown, in which the slider comprises upper and lower wings 1 and 2 and a neck portion 3, the upper wing 1 is provided with an integral bridge member 5 having a slot 6 therein dividing the bridge member into parts 5a and 5b, each of which is formed with a cam surface 9 adjacent the upper wing. The width of the slot 6 is sufficient to allow the insertion of a retaining portion 15 of a pull member 13. A cap 16, having resilient side walls 17 formed with recesses 18, protrusions 21 complementary to indentations 11 on the bridge member 5 and fingers 22, complementary to windows 12 in the wing 1 is assembled over the bridge member 5, with a coil spring 8 located in a hole 7 on the part 5a and bearing on the underside of the cap. The arrangement is such that when a pull is exerted on the member 13, the portion 15 rides up one or the other of the cam surfaces 9 and tilts the cap 16 against the spring 8 about the protrusions 21 to retract the fingers from their normal locking position between interlocking members of the slide fastener. A groove 10 in the upper wing 1 facilitates the tilting movement of the cap. In modifications Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the spring 8 may be replaced by a flat spring and the cap may be pivoted about a pin extending through the part 5a. The groove 10 may completely surround and accommodate the free edges of the walls 17. The slider may be non-locking by the omission of the fingers 22 and if desired the coil or flat springs. In this case additional connecting means may be provided between the cap and the part 5b. Alternatively, the cap may be omitted and the slot 6 closed by soldering or swaging or spring means may be provided between the portion 15 and the bridge member 5 to prevent disengagement of the pull member 13.
