Abstract

694,570. Coating webs. KODAK. Ltd. April 30, 1951 [May 2, 1950], No. 10818/50. Class 140. A web 1 is coated on one surface, e.g. by passing around roller 3 dipping in coating liquid 4, to a thickness at least one and a half times the desired thickness, and then passes through a wedge space formed by two nearly parallel flat surfaces, e.g. the inner surfaces of a plate 6 which abuts the web, and an adjustably-mounted plate 7, the surfaces being adjusted so that (a) the exit slit of the wedge is of a thickness approximately equal to the thickness of the web plus about one and a half times the thickness of the desired coating, and (b) the plane of the surface of the liquid on the web coming from the coating device to the wedge cuts the plane of the adjustable surface at a distance from the exit slit of the wedge in a direction against the motion of the web of 50-1,000 times the thickness of the desired coating. The coated web passes to a drying room over a roller 5. The method may be used for applying a photographic emulsion to film base. Specifications 309,866, [Class 140], and 578,098 are referred to.
