Abstract

694,008. Electric coils ; coil making apparatus. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). June 29, 1951, No. 15509/51. Class 35. [Also in Group XL (a)] A deflecting coil assembly for a cathode-ray tube (see Group XL (a)) comprises two pairs of transverse deflecting coils 15, 16 and 17, 18, Fig. 6, having the coil sides interlocked to form a hollow cylinder, the longitudinally extending sides being of substantially uniform length and the coil ends having wedge-shaped sections with the inner surface flared conically so that the inner surface is adapted to lie along the surface of the envelope of a wide angle cathode-ray tube. The coils may be surrounded by a plastic former comprising two identical parts as shown in Fig. 4, the former having longitudinal ribs 39 which serve to space the coils. The former may be surrounded by a magnetic core. Fig. 12 shows an exploded view of the winding head for winding the coils. The central portion of the winding head 78 is cut away to receive removable winding arbor parts 84, 85 which are saddle-shaped according to the desired shape of the coil; the left-hand part 84 is provided with a pair of coil anchor posts 88, 89 provided with spring clips to hold the start and finish leads. The ribs 79, 80 and spokes 82, 83 form butterfly vanes for guiding the wire as smoothly as possible into the winding slot. In making the coil, the insulated wire may first be coated with a thermosetting plastic resin compound so that after the coil is wound it may be baked to set it in the required shape, no taping then being necessary to hold it together. Specification 604,736 is referred to.
