Abstract

692,915. Shearing. LOEWY ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Dec. 31, 1951, No. 30459/51. Class 83 (iv). A rotary drive for flying shears comprises two separate gear trains with different speed reductions which are alternately made operative and inoperative between successive cutting operations to enable one gear train to drive the shear during cutting and the other to drive the shear during the rest of the cycle. Rotary flying shears 10 with blades 13 are driven through a reduction gear 14 from a shaft 22 coupled through gearing 23, 24 and an electromagnetic clutch 26 to a shaft 21 rotated from an electromotor 19. The train 23 rotates the shear at the basic speed and the train 24 drives the shear at less than the basic speed. If the train 23 is permanently in operation and the train 24 inoperative the shear will be driven at the basic speed. In order to vary the length cut the clutch 26 is actuated to allow the electromotor 19 to drive the shear at a reduced speed through the gearing 28 between cuts. The clutch 26 may be controlled by two rotary cam-actuated switches on the shaft 11, the operating cams being angularly adjustable. The clutch may also be controlled as shown in the drawing. A rotary limit switch 33 is attached to the shear shaft 11 and two small alternators 34, 35 driven from the shafts 21, 22 are coupled to an induction machine 36, the rotor of which carries control means 37 for energizing and de-energizing the coils 31, 32 of the clutch. The shear begins to rotate at basic speed. At a preselected point of rotation of the shear the clutch is operated by switch 33 and the gear train 24 made operative. The lag between the shafts 21, 22 is indicated by the rotor of the inductor 36 and the control means 37 operates the clutch when the difference reaches a predetermined amount.
