Class 86 Apparatus for producing solutions of predetermined dilution comprises a flask 18 carried at the free end of a pivoted arm 2 which is adapted to pivot about a vertical pillar 3 through a segment of a circle and to be returned by a spring to its original position against a buffer a predetermined number of times to agitate the solution, after which, in automatically controlled sequence, the flask inverts to drain out a predetermined amount of the solution and returns to the normal position to receive a predetermined quantity of diluent from a funnel 22, the whole operation being repeated automatically a number of times determined by a counter 32. The driving and control mechanism includes a shaft 10 continuously rotated by gearing from an electric motor (not shown). The shaft 10 drives through gearing a shaft 5 which carries a sleeve 4a having an eccentric roller 4 engaging the arm 2, through which the rocking motion is imparted to the arm. The sleeve 4a is clutched to the arm for ten revolutions, the clutch being operated by a cam carried by the shaft 10. The shaft 10 also carries a cam 28 which operates a valve 24 in the funnel 22 for controlling the supply of diluent to the flask 18 and also has a partially toothed gear wheel 11 which co-operates with a partially toothed gear wheel 17 on a shaft 15 (not shown) on which the flask 18 is mounted, by means of which gearing and shaft the flask is inverted and returned to an upright position in the desired sequence.
