Abstract
692,558. Welding by pressure. GRAHAM MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. Nov. 9, 1949 [June 1, 1949], No. 28728/49. Class 83 (iv). In a welding gun for welding a stud w, Fig. 2, to a workpiece, the gun being connected during the welding operation to one terminal of an electric power source, whilst the other terminal is connected to the workpiece, and a main piston 26 being reciprocable in a cylindrical bore 24 and having a piston rod 27 carrying a chuck 21 for holding the stud, the bore 24 contains an auxiliary piston 39 for inserting the stud in the chucks. A conduit 44 admits compressed air to move the piston 39 against the action of a spring 40 interposed between the pistons 26, 39, thereby inserting a stud w in the chuck 21 and subsequently moving the main piston 26 until the stud w contacts the workpiece to complete and maintain a welding circuit. Means are provided for returning the pistons and concomitantly disconnecting the welding circuit after the completion of the weld. The studs ware supplied through a slot 20 to the chuck 21 and through a tube 19 either by hand or automatically, an escapement 22, Fig. 6, ensuring that one stud only is provided during each operating cycle of the gun. The escapement 22 comprises pallets 73, 74 pivotally mounted on a bracket 71 at the lower end of the gun body 23, and is actuated by a finger 76 on an arm 53 through which the piston rod 27 is connected electrically to a supply lead 61. On actuation of the gun the finger 76 moves downwardly to allow the pallets 73, 74 to be turned by springs 75, 81 so that the pallet 73 releases a stud w which falls and is obstructed by the end 77 of the pallet 74. On the return stroke of the piston rod 27 the finger 76 rotates the pallets 73, 74 so that the pallet 74 releases a stud w, the succeeding stud being held by the pallet 73. The retraction of the pistons 26, 39 is effected by compressed air supplied continuously through an arm 11 supporting the gun to the space beneath the piston 26, the conduit 44 being connected to atmosphere. A system for operating the gun is described having safety control devices similar to those described in Specification 692,559. Specification 692,553 also is referred to.
