Abstract

692,082. Optical apparatus; turbidometers. LEVITIN, J. Dec. 9, 1948, No. 31873/48. Classes 97 (i) and 97 (iii). To permit of measurement of the number and size of particles in a liquid suspension a transparent or opaque flat slide has therein one or more shallow closed rims forming enclosures into which a drop of the suspension may be placed, the liquid allowed to evaporate, and the deposited particles counted and measured microscopically or the density or reflectivity of the deposit measured photometrically or photoelectrically whereby the amount of material present may be deduced. As shown, the slide may carry a number of circular rims of different size or the rims may be square or of equal size. The slide may be of glass, synthetic resin or of metal. By microscopic examination of the deposit the frequency and size distribution of the particles and the specific surface of the deposit may be found. For rapid determination of the concentrating material in a drop of suspension, equal drops are placed one in each of the enclosures shown in Fig. 5 and form a knowledge of the size of enclosure which is completely covered by a single layer of deposit as determined by visual inspection the concentration can be deduced. The sedimentation apparatus described in Specification 692,083, [Group III], may be used.
