Abstract

691,776. Toothed gearing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. [General Electric Co.]. Nov. 23, 1951, No. 27540/51. Class 80 (i). In a sun-planet-annulus epicyclic gear for transmitting heavy loads wherein double helical teeth are employed -and the reaction ring gear is floating, the planet carrier comprises inner and outer cage members connected by radial pins located in the middle plane of the gears so that the outer member, which supports the planets, may flex about radial axes, thereby preventing the distortion of the carrier under load from affecting alignment of the gears. The driving or driven carrier shaft 4 is supported in journal and thrust bearings (not shown) in a part 1a. of a split casing 1, and the end plate 2 of the casing supports a bearing 5 for a ring 10 of the inner cage member 7 of the carrier, this member being connected to or integral with the shaft 4. The member 7, Fig. 3, has arms 8 which have extensions 9 connected to cr integral with the ring 10. The sides 9a of the extensions are almost radial, and are not coplanar with the sides of the arms 8. The outer cage member comprises spaced walls 19, 20 having openings 21 to receive the planet shafts, which are non- rotatable, and bushed radial bores 25 to receive rotatably pins 26 which are pressed in bores 11 of the member 7. Caps 28 on the outer cage member prevent outward movement of the pins 26. The driven or driving shaft 15 may be integral with the sun pinion 14 and is journaled and axially located within the member 7 by lined bearings 12, 18. The planets 23 have lined bores to rotate on the hollow shafts 22, and comprise toothed rims shrunk on to body portions. The floating reaction ring gear 31 may be formed in two rings secured together and is held against rotation by a double-toothed sleeve 33 coupling external teeth on the ring gear with a fixed toothed ring secured to the end plate 2. An oil pump 37, driven from a ring gear 40 bolted to the planet carrier, supplies oil from the housing 1 through coolers and strainers (not shown) to chambers 6, 13 and to bores in the planet shafts. The gear 40 also drives a power take-off 41-e.g. for a tachometer. Spur or other teeth may replace the double helical teeth, and antifriction bearings may replace the plain bearings.
