Abstract

Materials of construction resistant to fluorine and acid fluorides comprise at least a matrix of a self-hardening iron phosphate cement in which the average valency of the iron is less than 3; cupric and/or aluminium phosphate may also be included in the cement. The cement is prepared by mixing 70-100 per cent phosphoric acid with powdered ferrosoferric oxide or ferrous oxide, and if desired cupric or aluminium oxide and a filler resistant to fluorine. Preferably the ratio of metal oxide to phosphoric acid is at least 1, for example 1-10; excess metal oxide particles are cemented together by the metal phosphate. The mixture is cast, extruded, or used as a joining compound, and allowed to harden; the setting time may be controlled by varying the degree of calcination of the metal oxides prior to mixing. Apparatus for handling fluorine or its compounds, for example various parts of the electrolytic cell described in Specification 668,465, [Group XXXVI], may be made of, or coated with, the compositions. A non-conductive filler, e.g. rouge, calcium fluoride, or polymerized tetrafluoroethylene, may be included in the composition; conductive fillers, e.g. carbon, graphite, or fluorine-resistant metals, may also be used.ALSO:A composition resistant to fluorine and acid fluorides comprises at least a matrix of a self-hardening iron phosphate cement in which the average valency of the iron is less than 3; cupric and/or aluminium phosphate may also be included in the cement. Rouge, calcium fluoride, polymerized tetrafluoroethylene, carbon, graphite, or fluorine-resistant metals may be added as fillers. Parts of apparatus for handling fluorine are made of. coated with, or joined by the composition.
