Abstract

691,739. Supporting gramophone pick-ups. BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION. PETRIE, R. D., and LOCKYER, J. S. Sept. 19, 1949 [Sept. 20, 1948], No. 30925/49. Divided out of 691,732. Class 40 (ii). Relates to manual raising, lowering and traversing mechanism for a pick-up or other reproducer carried on a support arranged to move parallel to itself on a guide rail, movement being imparted to the support by tracking of the stylus in the record groove during reproduction. The carriage 7, Figs. 2 and 3, is supported by ball-bearing rollers 12 on a rotatable track rail 4 as described in Specification 691,732 and carries the arm 6 attached to the pick-up (not shown). Two levers 14 mounted at their lower ends in bearings 16 co-axial with the rail 4 carry, between their other ends, a rod 17 parallel to the rail 4 and rotatable in bearings 18 in the levers. The rod 17 is rotatable by the graduated vernier handwheel 24 through reduction gearing 22, 23, and friction wheels 20 and 19, the latter being carried by the rod 17. Leaf springs 26 on the levers 14 can be engaged by an eccentrically mounted rod 27 provided with a handle 28 for rotation, the leaf springs being maintained in contact with the rod 27 by tension springs 29. A friction wheel 30 is mounted on the counterweight 9 on the rearward extension of the pick-up arm 6, the axis of the wheel 30 being at a small inclination to the traversing direction, and the wheel being in a position to engage the rod 17 in one position of the latter. To raise the pick-up from the record the rod 27 is rotated by handle 28 to rock levers 14 so as to engage the rod 17 with wheel 30 to tilt the pick-up arm 6, carriage 7 and rail 4. At the same time wheels 19, 20 move into engage- .ment, so that rotation of rod 17 can be caused by rotation of the handwheel 24 to drive the carriage 7 along the rail 4 by operating the inclined friction wheel 30. A pointer on the carriage may indicate its position on the scale 32. Electric motors may be provided to effect either or both the lifting and traversing movements.
