Abstract

691,465. Scanning records photo-electrically. POSTMASTER GENERAL. Feb. 15, 1950 (Feb. 16, 1949], No. 4271/49. Class 40 (iii). Marks on a record, postage stamps on envelopes &c. are detected by means of an oscillating mirror which produces an image of the mark on an aperture in a diaphragm behind which is situated a photo-cell, an alternating signal being obtained from the cell as a result of the image movement in and out of the aperture. As shown, light reflected from a column of a record card G is focused by lenses L1, L2 and mirror M which may be concave on to a row of apertures B2 behind each of which is situated a photo-cell (refs. 1 to 9). The mirror is mounted on the reed of an electromagnetic vibratory system O. Fig. 4 shows the image of a card column superimposed on apertures in the diaphragm A. If vertical column 4 is scanned, photo-cell 5 will give an alternating output. The card may then be advanced one column. Alternatively, all the spaces on the record card may be scanned simultaneously if a photo-cell and diaphragm aperture is provided for each card space. The card boundary lines may be marked in a colour to which the photocell is made insensitive, possibly by means of a filter. Specification 468,448 is referred to.
