Abstract

691,292. Printing-machines. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. Oct. 9, 1947 [Jan. 13, 1947], No. 27137/47. Addition to 642.915. Class 100(ii) [Also in Group VIII] - Impression surfaces.-In a printer's blanket as described in the parent Specification wherein is provided a uniform facing layer of globular bodies or beads 9 secured by a bonding layer 11 to a flexible backing sheet 10, the backing sheet consists of or includes one or more continuous cushioning layers of a rubbery polymer material. One or more layers 12 of shear-resistant material such as woven fabric, certain papers, vulcanized or hydrolized. fibres, or tough glass fibre sheets may be incorporated in the blanket. An ink-repelling coating 21 may be applied to the beads 9, such coating comprising e.g. rubbery polymer material dissolved in hexone. The cushioning layer may comprise mixtures of synthetic and natural rubbers with resins to give adhesive properties; resins such as vinyl resins, acrylates or silicones may be used. An open-mesh fabric coated on both surfaces with the rubbery polymer may be employed. Among the specific examples given are (1) rubbery butadiene-acrylonitrite 100 parts by weight; compatible heat-reactive phenol resin 75 parts; plasticizer 17 parts; pigment (carbon black) 5 parts. The plasticizer may be diactyl phthalate, dibutyl sebacate or tributoxy ethyl phosphate. (2) Natural rubber 100 parts by weight; zinc oxide 5 parts; stearic acid 1 part; antioxidant 1 part; filler (channel black) 40 parts; delayed accelerator 0.25 parts; primary accelerator 0.75 parts; sulphur 3 parts. The antioxidant may comprise phenyl alpha naphthylamine and the delayed accelerator 2, 2- benzothiazyl di-sulphide. Cushioning layers may be employed having as basic ingredients Neoprene, " Thiokol " (R.T.M.), " Buna " (R.T.M.), plasticized polyvinyl chlorides, butyrals or silicon rubbers. Examples of suitable compositions 11 for bonding the beads 9 to the backing are given including one comprising Neoprene 10 parts; phenol-aldehyde resin 15 parts; diactyl phthalate 5 parts; zinc oxide 0.5 parts; magnesium oxide 0.4 parts all dissolved in butyl acetate. The beads 9 are immersed in the bonding 11 to a depth of not less than their radius. Specification 677,512 also is referred to. According to the Speciffcation as open to inspection under Sect. 91, instead of beads 9, a rubbery layer may be applied to the cushioning layer and embossed to form a hard discontinuous surface of minute convex or pyramidal protuberances. Also the use of glue-glycerine compositions for the backing is described. In addition, the material may be used as wipers for intaglio printing-machines, as back greys in textile printing machines, or as bands in bronzing machines. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
