Class 75(iii) The invention relates to lighters of the type in which a. valve D controlling the flow of gas to a torch C at the end of a flexible tube b' is operated by rotating a holder D<2> for the torch and in which, when the torch is inserted horizontally in the holder, its weight causes the holder to rotate to close the valve. The invention consists in that an electric filament igniter E for the torch is positioned on the valve casing A so that when the torch is in the horizontal position in. the holder the filament e is adjacent the torch and a switch connecting the filament with a battery in a housing on the valve casing is closed by the holder simultaneously with the onening of the gas valve. The holder D<2> is formed as an extension of the valve D and comprises a socket into which the torch is inserted and in which it is held by a spring pressed ball. A lateral opening d<2> in the socket for the outflow of gas from the torch faces the filament igniter E when the socket is in the position corresponding to the valve being open. The torch comprises a handle part and a nozzle having an end outlet and also a lateral outlet c<1> which directs gas through the opening d<2> in the socket. The switch comprises a spring influenced stationary contact and a co-acting contact f<1> carried by the valve D. The filament e is mounted in a sheath screwed into a socket on the valve casing. A resilient washer may be inserted between the valve D and the valve casing to hold the valve in open position when the torch is withdrawn from the holder. The Provisional Specification states that the switch is opened by a spring on withdrawing the torch from the holder, that the valve may be a sliding type operated by a cam on the holder and that a shoulder on the casing prevents the torch from being withdrawn until it has been ignited.
