Abstract
691,078. Ball-and-float valves. GLOCKER, P. Dec. 15, 1950 [Dec. 16, 1949; July 28, 1950], No. 30676/50. Class 135 A nozzle 1 for filling containers with liquid includes a flow control valve (not shown) which is opened when its stem 22 is raised on pulling up a handle 3, the valve being maintained in the open position by a pivoted latch 4 engaging the handle, and the catch is released to allow the valve to close when the rising liquid in the container lifts a float 5. The latter acts through a wire 7 to lift a ratchet pawl 8 from a toothed wheel of a gear train of which the end member 17 carries a cam 16 co-operating with an abutment on the latch 4. The spindle of the member 17 is encircled by a spring motor which is wound up by a handle 14, movable between stops 15, 20, so that, when the pawl 8 is released, the spring rotates member 17 whilst running down, and the cam 16 swings latch 4 out of engagement with handle 3. to allow the valve to close. The float 5 reciprocates in a tube 6 parallel to the nozzle 1. In a modification, tube 6 runs inside the nozzle, the handle 3 carries a separate, adjustably hinged, lever which is engaged by the pivoted latch. and the member 17 carries a pin which engages a spring arm during the final part of the running down movement of the spring in order to damp down or brake the gear train.
