Abstract
690,275. Gathering seaweed. SCOTTISH SEAWEED RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Nov. 23, 1949 [Nov. 23, 1948; Dec. 25, 1948], Nos. 30463/48 and 33335/48. Class 6(iii) An apparatus for gathering seaweed comprises an endless conveyer A extending between a surface vessel 7 and the seabed and carrying cross-bars fitted with hooks 3 for engaging the weed. The conveyer is driven in the opposite direction to the travel of the boat to avoid entanglement of the hooks 3 by irregularities. Chain netting 4 extends between the cross-bars and the lower end of the conveyer is likewise encased in netting 11 to avoid entanglement of weed with the driving sprockets. In a modification, Fig. 3, the conveyer runs athwart the boat with its lower run trailing over the sea-bed. In further modifications, the conveyer may be suspended laterally from a derrick or mounted between the boat and a floating buoy. Brushes or like stripping means may co-operate with the belt to remove the weed. Slipping clutches and shear-links may be included in the drive to allow for stoppages. The motion of the hooks may be used to propel the boat.
