Abstract
690.256. Air conditioning. AMERICAN INSTRUMENT CO., Inc. March 12, 1951, No. 5905/51. Class 137 [Also in Group XIX] Goods are tested by exposure to artificially produced climatic conditions maintained in a chamber which is connected with an apparatus having means for heating or cooling or humidifying air which is withdrawn from the chamber and returned thereto after conditining. As shown in the sectional plan, Fig. 1, a cabinet is divided by louvred partitions at right angles to each other into an air-intake compartment A, a spray compartment B and an airdischarge compartment C, and, as shown in Fig. 2, a lower space contains a refrigerating unit. The cabinet is connected with the space to be air-conditioned by an intake pipe 1 and a discharge pipe 18, the air circulation being maintained by a fan 13 driven by a motor 19. The sprays 6 in the compartment B are supplied by a pump 4 submerged in the water in the compartments A, B which is maintained at a constant level by supply means 65-67 and a drain arranged at the required level. The pump is driven by a motor 54 carried by the cover of the cabinet, the cover being in two portions which are supported on a water-seal lute 57. The air is heated or cooled or humidified, according to requirements, under pre-set electrical controls responsive to wet and dry bulb thermoregulators. The wet bulb regulator 2 which may dip into the water 78 or may be enclosed in a wick 63, is positioned in line with the air-inlet 1, and the dry bulb regulator 17 is in line with the air-discharge 18. The air may be passed directly from the compartment A to the compartment C by opening the vertically pivoted door 16, but, if the door is closed, the whole of the air passes through the spray-removing louvred baffle 3 to the spray compartment, and then through the other spray-remover 11 to the air-discharge compartment, the temperature being adjusted by an immersion heater 9, an immersed cooler coil 5, an airheater 14 manually controlled, and an airheater 15 controlled by the dry-bulb thermo-regulator. The coil 5 is connected to a receiver 30 and compressor 32. A thermostatically controlled expansion valve 25 includes a temperature controlled element 33 which is clamped to the coil 5 so that the temperature of the coil controls the valve 25. The water level is indicated' by a float 24, and the water is stirred by a submerged jet supplied by the pump 4.
