Abstract

690,184. Harvesting maize. MINNEAPOLIS-MOLINE CO. June 20, 1950, No. 15428/50. Class 6(iii) [Also in Group XXX] A maize-harvester comprises a threewheeled tractor, with a single rear steering wheel 17, and includes a forward, vertically - adjustable picker unit 33 and a rearward husker unit 176 interconnected by a conveyer 117, the upper part of the conveyer framework being connected by links to both the husker unit and the picker unit, and the lower part being articulated to the upper and being mounted on the picker unit so as to be movable therewith as the picker unit is adjusted relatively to the ground. The picker unit 33 comprises two pairs of conventional snapping rolls 62 and adjacent gathering chains 68, 75, the snapped maize-heads being passed to the centrally - disposed slat - conveyer 117. This conveyer passes the heads to a shoot 135 above the husking rolls 180, 181, whence the husked cobs pass to a loading elevator 200. The rear part of the harvester, including the husker unit and the elevator 200, is rigidly mounted on a main frame 28 which is supported on The tractor chassis 11 at points 25 and 27. The picker unit 33 is pivoted to the frame 28 at 36 and is raisable by a hydraulic jack 50 operating through links 47, 41, and a rockshaft 38, the lifting action being assisted by counterbalance springs 110. The upper sprockets 130 of the conveyer 117 are mounted within a bonnet 134 which is connected by links 154 to the main frame 28, adjacent to the husker unit, and by links 137 to the picker unit. The upper guides 126 and base plate 128 for the conveyer 117 are articulated at 149 to the lower guides 125 and base plate 127, which move with the picker unit. The conventional. husking unit 176 includes a husking conveyer cooperating with upper resilient rollers 180 and lower rollers 181 with projections 182. Below the husking unit i s a combined husk-remover and grain-saving device comprising a slat conveyer 216 with a perforated base 222. Husks are carried by the slats 220 to an inclined apron 221 where they are engaged by the downwardlytravelling return run of the conveyer 117 and swept on to the ground. Maize grains pass through the sieve 222 and are swept by the return run of the conveyer 216 on to the elevator 200. The snapping and husking rolls and the various conveyers are all driven from a central drive mechanism 100, Fig. 2, driven by the tractor engine 10. The single wheel 17 is located behind one of forward wheels 13, the other wheel 14 being laterally-offset. The harvester is symmetrically disposed relatively to the wheels 13 and 14.
