Abstract
689,687. Making slip-lasted shoes. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Aug. 28, 1950 [Aug. 27, 1949; May 12, 1950], Nos. 22301/49 and 11865/50. Class 17 (i). Relates to a method of, and means for, positioning a shoe bottom member such as a precemented platform or platform unit P, on the sock lining S of a slip-lasted shoe mounted on a last L with the seam which unites lining S and platform cover C overlying heel end of last, attaching such member in position under pressure, while the heel end portion of the platform cover C occupies a right side out position, and turning the toeward portion of the cover C into the right side out position. The heel portion of the platform cover C is stretched by a U-shaped former and smoothed, the heel end of the cover urged heelwards of the last into positions where the seam which unites the cover C and sock lining S overlies substantially the periphery of the heel end of the last and so that unit P may be easily inserted. Two modifications of apparatus for carrying out the method are described, in both of which a shoe upper U, sock lining S and platform cover C secured together by a single seam are supported in inverted position on a last pin 40 and toe rest 42 and moved on a guideway 22 and between two stations, at one of which, shown in Fig. 1, which shows the head of the apparatus, means are provided to facilitate the location and attachment, under pressure, of the platform to the lining S thrust on the cover C having moved the lining S and cover into correct location relative to the last, and at the second the toe portion of the platform cover is turned. In its movement the shoe engages a V-shaped notch in a centring gauge plate 86 to centre the shoe, as a block 46 slides in a transverse groove 56. Springs 100 yield to permit the shoe to be pushed far enough to permit a U-shaped band 140, when caused to descend by downward operation of a handle 152, to enter within the upturned heel end of platform cover C, where it is held by spring 172 yieldingly against sock lining S. Gripping handles 186 are operated to spread the arms of the band 140 to receive the heel end of platform P. The shoe is then advanced toewardly by bringing arms 124 into engagement with rolls 60 by operation of a treadle rod 134 until heelward end of band 140 slides just over the stitching which unite lining S and cover C at heel end. The platform P, which is laid in position on lining S is pressed against the lining S to activate the cement to adhere it to the shoe by swinging a handle 278, Fig. 1, to bring members 204, 218, 226, Fig. 8, against the platform P. After the band 140 has been withdrawn by handle 152 from between heel H and cover C, the pressure means is released by raising handle 278. The shoe is next rocked about the axis of the arcuate guideway in block 46 on which last pin 40 is carried to raise shoe toe off rest 42, and pushed forward along guideway 22 until toe end of cover C strikes against stop 350, when the horn is guided between the last L and platform P. A pad 300 is operated by treadle connected to rod 340 to push the toe end of shoe down to cause cover G at toe to be turned over horn 302 into right side out position. Rod 340 is then released and last removed. A modified form of device for pressing the platform P on sock lining S is described, Fig. 15, in which a toothed lug 358 on a cross bar 352 connecting arms 354 pivoted in bracket walls 106 engage the surface of heel H to hold the heel and entire platform P against toeward movement when the shoe is urged forwardly. The pressing means which press the platform P against the lining S are modified by the omission of the cross bar 226.
