Abstract

689,003. Batteries. CHLORIDE ELECTRICAL STORAGE CO., Ltd. Dec. 17, 1951 [March 5, 1951], No. 5234/51. Class 53. An accumulator grid is made of wire gauze of copper, brass or bronze which is dipped in molten lead or an alloy of lead with tin or antimony. After the lead or alloy has cooled, the warp and weft wires of the gauze become rigidly interlocked. Large pieces of the coated gauze may be cut to size and the exposed metal at the cut edges may be covered with lead by a further dipping process or by means of a hot iron. Alternatively, the cut gauze may be placed in a mould and an outer frame of lead cast round it. The grid may finally be covered with an electrolytically deposited layer of lead, tin or a lead alloy and pasted with lead oxide. The wire used for making the gauze may be coated with lead or alloy before weaving and the gauze heated in an oven till the lead fuses and locks the whole together. The Provisional Specification states that metals other than copper, brass and bronze may be used for the grids which may be made by stamping machining or casting.
