Abstract

Organic compounds liable to deterioration by peroxide formation are stabilized with small amounts of diaminodurene, or an alkylated or acylated diaminodurene. Compounds mentioned are liquid aldehydes, ethers, and esters of unsaturated carboxylic acids. Preferably 0.001 to 1 per cent of additive is present. Diamino durene is preferred. Other durenes mentioned and the preparation of which is detailed are N,N1-tetramethyl-, N,N1-diisopropyl- and N-ethyl-N1-acetyl-diamino durene, the last two compounds being new. Diamino durene is made by nitrating durene and reducing the product and the N,N1-tetramethyl- and -diisopropyl-derivatives respectively by treating diamino-durene with methyl iodide under alkaline conditions and by reacting dinitro or diamino durene with acetone in the presence of hydrogen preferably at elevated temperature, e.g. 50-100 DEG C., and pressure, e.g. 20-50 atmos., and with a hydrogenation catalyst, e.g. platinum-on-charcoal. N-Ethyl-N1-acetyl diamino durene is made by acetylating durene and partially reducing the diacetyl compound thus formed with, e.g. lithium aluminium hydride, preferably in a solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran, at elevated temperature. In examples: (1) nonaldehyde, (2) tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, and (4) methyl esters of linseed oil are stabilized with diamino durene, other stabilizers are N,N1-tetramethyl-and N-ethyl-N1-acetyl-diamono-durene in (1) and N,N1-di-isopropyl-diamino-durene in (2). According to the Provisional Specification fatty, vegetable and lubricating oils may also be stabilized.ALSO:Petrol is stabilized by the addition of a small amount of diaminodurene or an alkylated or acylated derivative thereof. Preferably 0.001 to 1 per cent of additive is used. Diaminodurene is preferred, other durenes specified being N, N1-tetramethyl-, N, N1-diisopropyl- and N-ethyl-N1-acetyldiamino durene. In Example 3 thermally cracked petrol is stabilized with 0.04 per cent of diaminodurene.
