688,598. Making compound plates and sheets; continuous-casting machines; casting composite plates and sheets. BRENNAN, J. B. June 12, 1951, No. 13912/51. Classes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). A method of continuous casting comprises laterally confining two longitudinally-moving metallic bodies of which at least one is molten, heating that face of the other body adjacent said molten body, bringing the bodies together and solidifying the outer surfaces. A machine for this purpose may comprise a die with a number of passages converging into one, a heater for rendering molten or plastic at least those faces of the bodies brought into contact, and cooling means to ensure solidity of the outer faces at the single passage. Two electrically-heated pots 16 may supply two converging passages 47, 48 of a die 49. The metal may be heated by a high frequency coil 51 and cooled by fluid in passages 52 and projected at 22. The level in the pots may each be maintained by introducing molten metal through valves 34, 35, opened alternately, a chamber 31 which can be placed under pressure by a valved pipe 37, and a crucible 38 which is tilted, when the level in the pot falls, by a motor 44 and a switch 45, operated by a float 39. The valves 34 ... 36 may be operated by hand or automatically from the crucible 38. In a modification a preformed strip C, Fig. 2, is fed to the passage 47 and heated by the coil 51, but the die used has cooling passages 62 so that only the upper face of the strip C becomes plastic. Castings; welding by pressure.-The material emerging from the die may be welded and, if desired, reduced or worked by rolls 29. In an example, rolled steel strip C may be welded to continuously cast strip B.
