Abstract
688,439. Resistance coatings and deposits. BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. May 29, 1951 [June 1, 1950], No. 12553/51. Class 37. A method of making a resistor having a modified tin oxide coating on a ceramic base comprises heating the base to a temperature of from 1300‹ to 1500‹ F. and then dipping the base while at the chosen temperature in a solution comprising stannic chloride, acetic acid, and alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl alcohol, and a substance taken from the group consisting of antimony pentachloride, antimony trichloride or antimony. The solution may include hydrofluoric acid. Numerous manufacturing examples are given and in these a zircon or porcelain base heated to the chosen temperature, e.g. 1300‹ or 1500‹ F., is dipped for from 1 to 8 seconds, the latter in successive dips of 4 seconds duration, in the selected coating solution which is at a temperature between 230‹ and 260‹ F., e.g. 255‹ F. and may comprise equal volumes of glacial acetic acid and methyl alcohol with two volumes of anhydrous stannic chloride to which has been added 1 to 50 per cent of antimony metal, pentachloride or trichloride, with or without 1 to 10 per cent of hydrofluoric acid, based on the total weight of the solution before addition of the antimony or H.F. component. In the constructional example shown, the modified tin oxide resistance film 11 is formed on a cylindrical ceramic rod between silver end contacts 12, Fig. 2, and the completed resistor, Fig. 3, has metal end caps 13 and a spiral groove 14 cut in the resistance film. The resistance film may be formed on the entire surface of a chosen base and then film portions removed by the use of hydrochloric acid and zinc in solution to produce a desired pattern. The invention provides resistors of zero resistance/temperature coefficient for operation at 400‹ C.
